Close But Not Quite
Aaah! My first GPS! I couldn’t wait to get it out of the the box & on my dashboard. Maybe it’s because I’m a newbie, but the Garmin is giving me some problems. A major issue is that it gets me NEAR my destination but not quite THERE. Forget about anything in a shopping center or near one. Also not fond of it using the term “stay” right instead of “turn” right — there’s a difference.
Having recently moved to a new state, I’m relying on the Nuvi to really be my navigator. I want it to tell me which of the upcoming streets to turn on when I can’t read the signs. But I’ve had more than my share of mishaps & missed turns as well as just plain wrong directions. So I’m experiencing some cognitive dissonance about my choice of the Garmin.
I’d also like to know route numbers as well as street names, & have that crucial next turn be written in larger letters across the top.
My fav backseat driver!
I’m very happy with this unit and would recommend it if you are looking for a gps with a few key bells and whistles (although it is not a fully loaded model it also does not have a fully loaded price).
PROS: Large 4.3″ screen (easy to see with a quick glance), gives you warning a turn is coming ahead of time with turn by turn SPOKEN DIRECTIONS WITH STREET NAMES (helpful when there is more than 1 choice, ie. a shallow left and a hard left), a pleasant voice (Samantha American English–the one I liked best of many possible selections) and traffic reports (through MSN direct–haven’t tried this yet comes with a limited time free trial). It also has blue tooth capabilities for phone or MP3 players (don’t use this, but might in the future–you can disable this easily if you don’t need it), an emergency locator function (VERY HANDY if you urgently need gas, the police, or a hospital RIGHT NOW). Finally, it has an SD card slot with picture viewer capabilities (nice but my camera does that already). This gps is incredibly easy to use, it is my first, and I haven’t read the instruction manual yet, it’s that intuitive! So far in months of use it has only gotten me lost once, and that was only because the place I was going was so recently built that many of the surrounding streets were still being paved… so I can’t blame the unit.
Some things could be improved. The battery doesn’t last more than about 3-4 hours, although unlike most other gps units, you don’t have to buy a seperate power cable because this unit came with an MSN Direct receiver integrated vehicle power cable. The unit also comes with a suction cup mount which is not very effective, but bridged the gap until I could get something I liked better. Finally, a problem that is less prevelant than what I have seen in some other gps units–it sometimes mistakes a freeway frontage road for the freeway or vice versa (annoying but hardly earth shattering).
In short, this is a good basic unit (with a good basic price) that I would highly recommend. Oh, one final piece of advice, buy a garmin nuvi lifetime map update card Garmin nüMaps Lifetime North America Map Updatesto keep your unit current. Remember your gps is only as accurate as its last map update!
Garman Nuvi GPS Review
Was not accurate finding my home. It jumped to next highway number near my home and will not let me correct it to proper highway without ignoring and honing to wrong highway number. Also would not take me to shortest route on my trip from southeast to midwest to west coast and return. Good value for the money though.

I love it! It has everything what GPS should have and more and all for $130. Love It !
Reliable GPS plus nice features
This model was discontinued by Garmin, presumably because the included MSN traffic information service is to be discontinued in the near future.
I live in Argentina where such a service is not available anyway, but wanted to have a GPS capable of receiving such information in case the service gets deployed in the future, and this unit was cheaper than any other with similar features on Amazon.
The pros:
+ Bluetooth (yet to be tested, but an interesting feature to have)
+ The holder with suction cup to attach to the windshield (the GPS clips on it fast and reliably. Has never got detached)
+ Reliability (as long as the maps are accurate enough, it never got me to the wrong place)
+ Accuracy
+ The embeded software (intelligently zooms in and out the map view ehan you’re approaching the next turn in your itinerary. Certainly a feature I didn’t expect)
+ The screen size
+ The battery life (has lasted from 4 to five hours)
+ The USB port (the GPS works like a mass storage when attached to a PC. No drivers needed)
+ Easily upgradable (you can download Argentina maps for free at [...])
+ Ease of use
The cons:
- I can’t get the GPS to show the name of every street in the map. no matter how much I zoom in or out.
- Everytime you switch it on, the unit takes several seconds to load the maps.
- Takes some time to locate the satellites every time you switch it on, but I guess this is a drawback of the technology itself.
Overall a good product by Garmin, which I would buy again.
